Marcos Evangelista de Moraes, commonly known simply as Cafu, is a former Brazilian international footballer player who is currently a free agent and is expected to take his final decision to retire in January 2009. He plays as a right-back and is regarded as one of the best ever right-backs. Cafu has won the World Cup twice with Brazil and the UEFA Champions League once with Italian powerhouse AC Milan. Cafu was named by Cafu in March 2004 as one of the 125 greatest living footballers. Cafu commnenced his professional club football at Brazilian giants Sao Paulo in 1989 and played for them until 1994, scoring 7 goals in 115 league matches. He won the Copa Libertadores in 1992 and 1993 and was named the South American Footballer of the Year in 1994. Cafu subsequently played for Juventude, Real Zaragoza and Palmeiras before landing at AS Roma in 1997. He featured for the Rome club until 2003, scoring 5 goals in 163 Italian Serie A matches. He won the scudetto with Roma in 2001 and the Coppa Italia in 2003. It was at Roma that he earned the nickname “El Pendolino” (The Express Train). In 2003 Cafu moved to Italian powerhouse AC Milan and won the Italian Serie A title with them in his debut season. He also featured in his first UEFA Champions League final in 2005 and actually won the competition with in 2007. At the end of the 2007-2008 season Cafu’s contract with Roma came to an end. He had scored 4 goals in 119 league matches for Milan. As of now, Cafu is without a football club at the moment and has declared that he shall make a final decision on whether he shall retire in January 2009. Cafu made his international debut for Brazil in 1990 and went onto feature in 142 international matches for his nation, between then and 2006, scoring 4 goals. He is the most capped Brazilian player of all time and has appeared in the World Cup finals in a record 21 matches. He won the 1994 and 2002 World Cup and has featured in four successive World Cup fianls.
Michael James Owen born on December 14, 1979 in Chester, UK is an English football player. He plays as a striker, and is noted particularly for his speed and acceleration. He has enjoyed a hugely successful and high-profile career at both club and international level.
He first played for his primary school team in Wales, breaking all the local scoring records in his first season. Liverpool signed Owen as an apprentice while in his teens, although as a boy he had been a supporter of their arch local rivals Everton. With Owen's help, Liverpool's youth team won the FA Youth Cup in 1996.
He signed professional forms for the senior team just after his seventeenth birthday in December 1996, making a sensational debut for the team against Wimbledon F.C. in May 1997, coming on as a substitute and scoring a goal. He quickly became a first team regular in the following 1997-98 season, and was that season's joint top scorer in the Premier League, scoring eighteen goals (equal with Chris Sutton and Dion Dublin). That same season, he was voted PFA Young Player of the Year.
He continued to be a consistent goalscorer for Liverpool, and in 2001 helped the club to their most successful season for several years. The team won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup, with Owen scoring two goals in the last few minutes against Arsenal in the FA Cup final to turn what appeared to be a 1-0 defeat into a 2-1 victory. Surprisingly, however, he failed to score in the team's incredible 5-4 victory against Deportivo Alavés in the UEFA Cup, and was substituted in that game. At the end of the year, he became the first British player for twenty years to win the European Footballer of the Year award.
Due to Liverpool's continued failure to win the Premier League or the Champions League, Owen was often linked with moves to other clubs, although he initially remained loyal to his first employers. However, due to stalled contractual talks in the summer of 2004, and with only one year remaining on his contract before he could leave the club on a free transfer, Liverpool sold Owen to Real Madrid for a fee of 12 million euros on 13 August 2004, with midfielder Antonio Nunez moving in the other direction.
Owen had a slow start to his Madrid career and drew some criticism from fans and the Spanish press for his lack of form, often being confined to the substitutes bench during matches. However, a successful return to action with the England team in October 2004 seemed to revive his morale, and on his first match back with Madrid following this he scored his first goal for the team, the winner in a 1-0 UEFA Champions League group game victory over Dynamo Kiev. He quickly followed this up just a few days later with his first Spanish league goal for the team in a 1-0 victory over Valencia, and also hit the target in the three of the next four games to make it 5 goals in 6 successive matches.
Owen had a highly successful record at Youth and Under-21 international level, although he was only briefly a member of the England Under-21 team before he made his debut for the senior team in a friendly match against Chile in February 1998. Playing in this game made Owen the youngest player to represent England in the whole of the 20th century.
Owen's youthful enthusiasm, pace and talent made him a popular player across the country, and many fans were keen for him to be made a regular player for the team ahead of that year's World Cup. His first goal for England, against Morocco in another friendly game just prior to this tournament, only increased these calls. The goal also made him the youngest ever player to have scored for England, until his record was surpassed by Wayne Rooney in 2003.
Although he was selected for the World Cup squad by manager Glenn Hoddle, he was kept on the bench as a substitute in the first two games. However, his substitute appearance in the second game against Romania saw him score a goal and hit the post with another shot, almost salvaging the defeat. After that, Hoddle had little choice but to play him from the start, and in England's second round match against Argentina he scored a sensational goal, voted by many as the goal of the tournament and really bringing him to the attention of the world football scene.
England lost that match and went out of the tournament, but Owen had sealed his place as an automatic England choice and his popularity in the country was huge. At the end of the year he won a public vote to be elected winner of the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year title, the award's youngest ever recipient.
He has since played for England in the 2000 and 2004 European Championships and the 2002 World Cup, scoring goals in all three tournaments. This makes him the only player to ever have scored in four major tournaments for England.
In April 2002, he was named as England's captain for a friendly match against Paraguay in place of the injured regular captain David Beckham. Owen was the youngest England skipper since Bobby Moore in 1963, and since then has regularly captained England during any absence for Beckham.
As of October 2004, Owen has been capped sixty-five times for England and scored twenty-eight goals: he is one of the England team's top ten goalscorers of all time.
Diego Maradona was born on 30 October 1960 in Villa Fiorito near Buenos Aires in Argentina. Maradona was an outstanding natural talent and played football from an early age. He was snapped up at just 10 by Los Cebollitas, a junior team belonging to Argentinos Juniors. Diego Maradona made his debut for the Argentinos Juniors senior team in 1976. From 1981 to 1982 he played for Boca Juniors (he had a second spell there from 1995 to 1997), but in 1982 he signed for Barcelona for £4.8 million. Diego Maradona continued his spell in Europe when he was transferred to Napoli for £6.9 million in 1984. He stayed there until 1991 and then had short spells with Seville, Newell's Old Boys, and Boca Juniors again, before retiring from playing. Maradona's greatest club successes came with Napoli, including winning the Italian league in 1987 and 1990 and the UEFA Cup in 1989. However, it was on the international stage that Diego Maradona had his most notable results and performances. Diego Maradona's 91 caps for Argentina included four World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, and 1994). His 34 international goals incuded the infamous 'hand of God' goal against England during the 1986 World Cup. Maradona's other goal in that game, ironically, was one of the best goals seen on the world stage. Argentina won the match 2-1 and went on to win the World Cup itself. Maradona has been no stranger to controversy on and off the pitch, and, in 1991, he was banned for 15 months after failing a drugs test. Maradona also tested positive for banned drugs at the 1994 World Cup. As well as having a drug addiction problem, which he had treated in Cuba, Diego Maradona has had troubles with his finances. He reportedly owes the Italian authorities 30 million Euros in back taxes and in 2006, Italian police stripped Maradona of two Rolex watches in part payment. In 2007 Argentina's central bank said it was investigating Maradona for alleged financial irregularities. Since his retirement from football Maradona has suffered from fluctuating health and weight problems. In 2007, Diego Maradona had health problems again and was admitted to hospital.
Nicknamed 'El Grande' in Argentina, where they so respect him that they have retired the Number 10 shirt, Maradona has two daughters, Dalma and Giannina. On 4 November 2008, Diego Maradona was confirmed as the new head coach of Argentina. Diego Maradona launched a controversial tirade on live TV after his Argentinian side qualified for the 2010 finals. Soon after Argentina got beaten by Germany in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, it was confirmed on 27 July 2010 that the Argentine Football Association had voted to remove Diego Maradona and appoint Sergio Batista as caretaker coach.
Ryan Joseph Giggs OBE born on 29 November 1973 in Ely, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom is a Welsh footballer who has played for Manchester United as a midfielder for the entirety of his club career to-date, and is famed as one of the greatest wingers of all time in the game. Giggs holds a slew of football records including being the most decorated player in British Football history, as well as the most successful English League winner as he collected his 10th FA Premier League winning medal on 11 May 2008. Giggs was the first player in history to win the PFA Young Player of the Year award consecutively and as of today has played and scored in every single season of the FA Premier League since its inception, also holding the league's records for most all time goal assists with 289 assists in 535 appearances. Giggs has had a stellar domestic and continental career and is the first player in UEFA Champions League history to have scored in 12 successive seasons, on top of being elected into the PFA Team of the Century in 2007, the English Premiership Team of the Decade, in 2003, as well as the FA Cup Team of the Century. Giggs is also the only United player to have played in all 10 League winning teams and the only Manchester United player to have played in both League Cup winning teams. At the 2008 UEFA Champions League Final, held on 21 May 2008, Giggs passed Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 759 appearances for Manchester United to become the club's all-time leader in appearances. On the International level, Giggs played for the Welsh national team prior to his retirement from international football on 2 June 2007, and was once the youngest player to ever represent his country. As well as the many honours Giggs has received within football such as being named in the Football League 100 Legends, he was awarded an OBE in the Queen's 2007 Birthday Honours List, and was inducted into the exclusive English Football Hall of Fame in 2005, for his services to English Football.
Roberto Carlos (born in Garça, São Paulo, Brazil, 10 April 1973; age 38 years) is a Brazilian footballer. He plays as a left wing-back. He currently plays for Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia. He never played for Brazil national team. Roberto is known as a player who has a hard kick. Roberto Carlos played for União São João, Palmeiras, Internazionale, Real Madrid, Fenerbahce, and Corinthians, before currently playing for Anzhi Makhachkala. Roberto, unlike other Brazilian players who eventually world-class super star, rather than early bloomer. Actually, he just got his first professional contract in 1993, when he was 20 years old, when the Brazilian club Palmeiras signed him from his youth club, União São João. Although a bit late stage debut in professional football, he made an immediate impact at Palmeiras and he played the most games in two seasons with the club, scoring five times in his 68 appearances. Zlatan Ibrahimovic born October 3, 1981 is a Swedish football player of Bosniak and Croatian descent. He plays as a striker. He currently plays for Inter Milan, in Italy, and for the Sweden national football team. Ibrahimović was born in Sweden as the son of immigrants from former Great Serbia. His father was born in Bijeljina (Republika Srpska) and his mother in Knin (Krajina). His parents met in Sweden and Zlatan grew up in Rosengård, a Malmö neighborhood known for its immigrant communities, where he also successfully completed junior high school (ninth grade). Although, thereafter admitted to Borgarskolan in Malmö, he soon discontinued high school in order to focus on his football career. Ibrahimović began playing football at the age of ten. His initial local club was called FK Beli Orlovi, whose participants unsurprisingly were Serbian and Somalian immigrants of the Rosengård neighborhood. In 1995 he joined Malmö FF. Other than Wenger, Leo Beenhakker also showed interest in Ibrahimović after observing him practicing in La Manga, Spain. Watching Ibrahimović score an amazing goal in a training game against Norwegian side Moss, Beenhakker became convinced of his talent. He went back to Amsterdam and on March 22, 2001, a deal between Ajax and Malmö regarding Zlatan's transfer to Amsterdam was announced and in July of the same year, he joined Ajax for record-breaking €7.8 million. The deal is by far the most lucrative any Swedish side has struck. The first competitive game he played in for the national team was the World Cup qualifying game against Azerbaijan in October 7 the same year. Ibrahimović was included in Sweden's 2002 World Cup squad that managed to go through to the finals despite playing in the Group of Death against Argentina, England and Nigeria. He only played for 45 minutes but nearly made the telling contribution in Sweden's eventual Golden Goal defeat at the hands of Senegal. Ibrahimović contributed heavily to Sweden's successful attempt to qualify to the 2006 World Cup. Both Sweden and Ibrahimović were thought to under-achieve in the tournament, though. He was substituted at half time in one game, against Paraguay, and did not participate in another, against England, due to a groin injury. How much his performances in the other games were affected by this is hard to know. Sweden was knocked out in the 2nd round by Germany. Mellberg and Wilhelmsson grudgingly accepted the punishment, but Ibrahimović felt that it was unjust. Thus, he refused to take part in the following games against Iceland and Spain. Sweden went on to win these matches without Ibrahimović. He also refused to take part in a friendly match against Egypt on February 7, but it has been reported lately that Ibrahimović agreed to return to Swedish national team. On March 28th, 2007, in a European Championship Qualifier game, Zlatan made his return. In the last match against Denmark Ibrahimović, responded to his critics, mesmerizing the audience with brilliant football, earning standing ovations as well as the Man of the Match award. Ibrahimović is 192 cm tall and powerfully built, and thus physical strength is one of his greatest assets. Since his arrival in Italy, he has become even stronger, since coach Fabio Capello, who is known to prefer physically strong players, ordered him to undergo a gym training program. It has been suggested by Ibrahimović himself that he might have added a couple of kilos too much, and that this contributed to the poor form in the spring of 2006.
Alessandro Nesta was born in 1976 in Rome, Italy. His first love was the SS Lazio football, in which he defended the shirt of the club for 10 years. Was progressing through the youth ranks, reaching the first team in the 1995-1996 season, where he was captain and led the blue team to get the Cup Winners Cup in 1999. In August 2002, Alessandro was transferred to AC Milan for the large sum of 30.2 million euros. On arrival at the Rossoneri, Nesta formed an excellent defensive pairing with compatriot Paolo Maldini, being a really great defense. Those two were the team leaders to get the Italian Cup. Also won the Champions League by UEFA, through penalties, in the final by defeating the mighty Juventus. Was convened for the first time the Italian team in 1996, playing for the under-21. With the largest made its debut at Euro 2000, where Italy was runner-up. He played in the World Cup Korea-Japan 2002 and Euro 2004, and although the World Cup in Germany in 2006 did not play due to injury, just as Italy was champion.
